RANKING SYSTEM

At One Way Martial Arts, we adhere to the belt ranking guidelines established by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). Detailed information about IBJJF's promotion criteria can be found at www.ibjjf.org

Our instruction method acknowledges student progress through two kinds of advancements: stripes and belts. Stripes symbolize interim achievements and serve as a motivation for students, recognizing their continuous effort and success. They are awarded spontaneously, fostering a spirit of relentless self-improvement and commitment. Stripes also act as indicators of skill level and experience, helping our instructors to match students of similar expertise for sparring sessions. In adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, each belt signifies a specific level of skill and knowledge.

White Belt

The white belt is the starting point in the Jiu Jitsu path, representing a beginner level. It's a vital phase for acquiring basic techniques and understanding the core principles of Jiu Jitsu. The duration to progress from this level varies, typically taking six months to two years, depending on the learner's physical abilities, previous martial arts experience, and commitment to the art.

Blue Belt

Earning a blue belt shows a grasp of fundamental movements and techniques in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). At this stage, practitioners can effectively defend themselves on the ground against untrained adversaries. This phase is essential for the practitioner's growth, as they gain the "street safe" status and begin to develop their unique style.

Purple Belt

Attaining a purple belt marks an enhanced proficiency in grappling. It's a challenging belt to achieve, necessitating a minimum of two years of dedicated training to refine and improve techniques.

Brown Belt

The brown belt denotes an advanced grappler on the verge of becoming a black belt. Brown belts display a well-rounded strategy and expertise in specific “go-to” techniques. They also excel in the mental aspects of Jiu Jitsu, adeptly planning techniques and strategies against opponents.

Black Belt

The black belt is the highest level of accomplishment in Jiu Jitsu, conferred to an exclusive group of practitioners. It symbolizes a mastery level, evident through flawless attack transitions, a vast repertoire of techniques, and rapid, tactical thinking. For these experts, the black belt marks the start of a new journey, often focused on teaching their skills to upcoming students.

As we always say, "A Black Belt is a White Belt who never gave up."
