What to Expect in Your First BJJ Class
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel intimidating — especially if you don't know what to expect. At One Way Martial Arts in Alexandria, VA, we've helped hundreds of complete beginners take that first step. Here's exactly what will happen when you walk through the door for your free trial class.
Before You Arrive
No special preparation needed. Wear comfortable athletic clothing — shorts and a t-shirt are fine. If you have a rash guard, wear it. If not, don't worry. We'll let you know about gear after your first class if you decide to continue. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to fill out a waiver and meet the coaching staff.
The Warm-Up
Class typically begins with a group warm-up — light jogging, movement drills, and BJJ-specific exercises like shrimping, bridging, and forward rolls. These might feel unfamiliar at first, but they're easy to pick up. Don't worry about doing them perfectly. Just move and follow along.
Technique Instruction
After the warm-up, the instructor will demonstrate 1–3 techniques. As a beginner, you'll be paired with an experienced training partner who will help guide you through the movements. This part of class is collaborative — no competition, just learning. Don't be afraid to ask your partner or the coach to repeat the technique if you missed something.
Drilling
You'll practice the techniques with your partner — one person performs the move while the other cooperates as the training dummy, then you switch. Repetition is how BJJ is learned. Focus on the mechanics, not on "winning" the drill.
Sparring (Rolling)
At the end of class, more experienced students will do live sparring (called "rolling"). As a first-timer, you may be invited to roll lightly or you might just watch. Either is fine. If you do roll, your partner will be instructed to go easy and help you apply what you just learned — not to submit you repeatedly.
After Class
Class ends with a bow or handshake — a sign of respect between training partners. This is a great time to ask questions, talk to the coaches, and meet other students. The culture at One Way in Alexandria is welcoming and supportive — you'll find people from all backgrounds who are genuinely happy to help a new person find their footing.
What You'll Feel Afterward
Tired. Probably confused about some of the techniques. Definitely a little sore the next day. And almost certainly — excited to come back. That combination of mental challenge and physical workout is what hooks most people on BJJ for life.
