Coach running a drill with kids in the Kids BJJ class at One Way Martial Arts in Alexandria, VA

What Age Can Kids Start Jiu-Jitsu? A Guide by Age

Short answer: most children can start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu between ages 3 and 5, and many academies begin at 4. The best age is the one where your child can follow a coach for 30 to 45 minutes. At One Way Martial Arts in Alexandria, VA, classes start at age 2 with Tumblers and run in four age groups up to 14.

There is no single right age. What matters is that the class fits your child's stage: toddlers need movement and games, young kids need short drills and lots of repetition, and older kids are ready for real technique and controlled sparring.

BJJ by age at One Way Martial Arts

  • Tumblers, ages 2 to 3: rolling, balance and listening games. The goal is comfort on the mat and following simple instructions.
  • Tots, ages 4 to 6: basic positions and escapes taught through games, with short rounds and lots of movement.
  • Kids, ages 7 to 10: real technique, drilling with a partner and controlled sparring.
  • Teens, ages 11 to 14: the full curriculum, with optional competition.

Children 7 and up can also add Kids Muay Thai. See all times on the class schedule and more about the program on our Kids BJJ page.

Signs your child is ready

  • They can follow a two-step instruction, like "walk to the wall, then sit down."
  • They can stay with a group activity for most of a class, with breaks.
  • They are curious about rolling around, climbing and wrestling with siblings. That energy is exactly what BJJ channels.

If your child is shy, that is normal. Some children watch for a few minutes before joining in, and coaches let them warm up at their own pace.

What kids get from starting early

Starting young gives children years of practice falling safely, moving their bodies and working with partners. Kids learn to stay calm when someone is on top of them, to try again after a mistake, and to respect their training partners. Belts and stripes give them regular, visible goals: children under 16 progress through white, grey, yellow, orange and green belts before moving to the adult system.

Who teaches the kids classes
