Self-defense that holds up under pressure

Most self-defense courses teach moves against a cooperative partner for a weekend, and then they fade. At One Way Martial Arts, self-defense is not a separate one-off class. It is what you train every time you step on the mat. You learn to stay calm, control distance, escape grabs, get back to your feet, and handle someone bigger or stronger, and you test it against a real, resisting partner under a coach's supervision.

We are a family-owned academy led by 4x IBJJF World Champion Mahamed Aly, with 70+ classes a week at 5416 Eisenhower Ave, next to the Van Dorn Street Metro.

How we teach self-defense

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The ground and close range: escaping holds, controlling an attacker, and getting back up safely. Built so a smaller person can defend against a bigger one. Start in Fundamentals.

Muay Thai

The standing side: punches, kicks, knees, elbows and the clinch for close-range defense. 15 classes a week, from Fundamentals up.

Boxing

Footwork, head movement and clean punching, so you can keep distance and protect yourself on your feet. 11 classes a week.

Self-defense for women

Women train in our regular BJJ, Muay Thai and Boxing classes alongside a welcoming team. Jiu-Jitsu in particular was built for the situation most women worry about: a larger, stronger person getting hold of you. You learn to escape, create space and get away, and you build real confidence because you have actually done it against resistance. No experience or fitness level is required to start.

Self-defense and anti-bullying for kids

Our Kids BJJ program teaches children to handle a push, a grab or a takedown without throwing punches, and to stay calm when things get physical. Classes are grouped by age: Tumblers (2–3), Tots (4–6), Kids (7–10) and Teens (11–14). Kids Muay Thai is available for ages 7 and up. Parents can train too, with family discounts so the whole family learns together.

Do you teach self-defense to kids?

Yes. Kids BJJ runs for ages 2 to 14 in four age groups, and Kids Muay Thai is for ages 7 and up. Kids learn to defend themselves calmly and without striking first.
